Reading arguments slowly

2026-09-21

When a paragraph is trying to convince me of something, I now do one thing before anything else: find the sentence that everything else is there to support. Everything that is not that sentence is either evidence, background, or a concession.

The second step is to ask what has to be true for the evidence to actually lead to the conclusion. Usually there is a gap, and the gap is where the interesting part of the argument lives.

It is slower at first. After a few weeks it stops feeling slow.
